History
From an early age, my mother, Teresa King, always encouraged me to start my own business. She told me of the great freedom that you can have working for yourself and I thank her for that. I tried many things, selling vitamins, Amway, and many other Multi Level Marketing programs that never quite panned out for me. I don’t think the programs were inherently bad per say, but I just didn’t find any passion or fulfillment in those programs.
After my unsuccessful attempts working for myself, I did the 9 to 5 thing just like everyone else. Having a regular job was always a good feeling even if I didn’t like. Around 2000, I got lucky and landed a job with Amazon.com. I didn’t have any great skills, just the ability to type and basic knowledge of how to use Windows. I was fairly happy working for Amazon.com as it is a great company with many opportunities, but they decided to move their customer service department to a different state and I was unwilling to relocate for a $28,000 a year job.
I learned many things working for Amazon.com, including some basic knowledge of building websites which I use to this day. After I was laid off, I started working for my mom building websites, but wasn’t making enough money to support my family. My Mom, seeing how I was struggling, purchased a website called Wrapcandy.com from eBay and signed it over to me. She was too busy to do anything with it at the time and thought I could make something happen.
Wrapcandy.com was an great blessing, even though it wasn’t the greatest site (one page at the time) it was my own. The program was terrible, but the concept was great. I spent the next several years learning how to advertise, hire software developers and programmers and manage a full blown business. Wrapcandy.com is still my favorite website ever.
